For a special few, the exploration, practice, and theory of magic is taught in a formal setting that makes the outside world drab and dull by comparison. These casters have spent the majority of their lives learning from those who have dedicated their lives to the craft, requiring study and effort to learn the mechanics of it. While this offers great magic potential, it comes at the cost of useful skills out in the world. Whatever motivation has driven them from academia to a life of adventure, they are going to have to learn how to survive in the real world as they go.
Because the devotion to magic is costly, these casters start with very few skills and will be forced to rely on their spells for survival. Collecting allies and standing as far back in combat as possible are among their best strategies. While they have only one specialty tree with a handful of Novice skills, they must balance purchasing survival skills vs spells as they advance before reaching Expert character rank, as Expert and Master skills will likely take over this focus at later levels.
